Traffic source type identification rules

  • In CODE Marketing cloud, traffic source types are identified usingGoogle Analytics default channel definition rules, of which, multiple types can be specified as shown below.
  • Specifically, the traffic source is identified in the following sequence.
    1. Traffic from advertisements
    2. Traffic from social media
    3. Direct traffic
    4. Traffic from a search engine
    5. Traffic from an internal site
    6. Traffic from other sites

1. Traffic from advertisements

When accessed using the following parameters, the source is identified as “Traffic from advertisements”.

  • utm_medium=cpc
  • utm_medium=ppc
  • utm_medium=cpa
  • utm_medium=cpm
  • utm_medium=cpv
  • utm_medium=cpp
  • utm_medium=paidsearch
  • utm_medium=content-text
  • utm_medium=affiliate
  • utm_medium=display
  • utm_medium=banner
  • gclid=XXXXXXX(random value)

2. Traffic from social media

When accessed using the following parameters, the source is identified as “Traffic from social media”.

  • utm_medium=social
  • utm_medium=social-network
  • utm_medium=social-media
  • utm_medium=sm
  • utm_medium=social%20network
  • utm_medium=social%20media

In other circumstances, the referrer URL can be obtained, and the source is identified as “Traffic from social media” even when traffic from specific site domains such as the following. (Internally on CODE Marketing cloud, about 40 site domains are designated as social media.)

  • 「Facebook」
  • 「Twitter」
  • 「Pocket」
  • 「LinkedIn」
  • 「Slideshare」
  • 「Instagram」
  • 「Foursquare」
  • 「mixi」
  • 「pixiv」, and more

3. Direct traffic

If the referrer URL could not be obtained or does not exist, the source is identified as “Direct traffic”.

4. Traffic from a search engine

If the referrer URL can be obtained and traffic comes from the following search engine domains, the source is identified as “Traffic from a search engine”.

  • 「Google」
  • 「Yahoo!」
  • 「Bing-」
  • 「AOL」
  • 「Ask.jp」
  • 「Baidu」
  • 「Yandex」

5. Traffic from other sites

If items 1 to 4 above do not apply, and the session is not interrupted by over 30 minutes of in-site migration, the source is identified as “Traffic from other sites”.

Precautions

  • When traffic comes from an SSL page to a non-SSL page, it is not possible to obtain the referrer URL, so this is regarded as direct traffic.
  • The “Traffic source type” is identified by original CODE Marketing cloud logic based on “Source parameters” and “Referrer URL”. If you want a more detailed identification or identification using a slightly different type of logic, configure targeting using “Source parameters” and “Referrer URL”.
